From Roots to Vines: A Winemaker’s Journey
Raised on a game farm in Zimbabwe and later educated at SACS in Cape Town, Toit’s early years were spent surrounded by nature. His path to winemaking began with viticultural training at Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch, where he graduated in 1999.
In 2000, Toit joined Ridgeback as a viticulturist, eager to understand the relationship between soil, vine, and the wine in the glass. His deep interest in terroir and its influence on wine quality set the foundation for his future success.
The Evolution of a Winemaker
After years of hands-on experience in the vineyards, Toit returned to Elsenburg in 2006 to pursue his winemaking diploma. Graduating as the top student of his year, he stepped into the role of Winemaker at Ridgeback in 2007, in the unique position of working with the very vines he had helped cultivate. His philosophy? Interfere less in the cellar and focus more on the vineyard-allowing the land to speak through each bottle.

Under Toit’s guidance, Ridgeback Wines has flourished, earning prestigious accolades, including Platinum, Double Gold, and multiple five-star ratings in the Platter’s Wine Guide. His commitment to crafting wines that embody Paarl’s distinctive terroir has placed Ridgeback among South Africa’s most celebrated producers.
