Cultivating a Passion for the Vine
Toit’s journey began on a game farm in Zimbabwe. His education at SACS in Cape Town laid the groundwork, but it was at Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch in 1999 that his passion for viticulture truly flourished. Recognising the importance of exceptional grapes for world-class wines, Toit joined Ridgeback in 2000 as a viticulturist. Here, he delved deep into the world of soils, understanding their profound impact on wine quality.
With a thirst for even greater knowledge, Toit returned to Elsenburg in 2006. His dedication paid off, as he graduated with his winemaking Diploma as the top student of his year.
A Return to Ridgeback: From Vine to Bottle
In 2007, Toit returned to Ridgeback in a truly privileged position – as the winery’s Winemaker. This meant crafting exceptional wines from the very vineyards he, alongside the experienced Ridgeback team, had helped cultivate.
A Philosophy of Minimal Intervention, Maximum Expression
Toit’s approach to winemaking is one of respect for the land and its unique character. He believes in crafting wines that are true to their region. This translates into minimal intervention in the cellar, with a strong focus on meticulous vineyard practices to ensure the grapes reach their full potential.
The results speak for themselves. Ridgeback wines have garnered numerous awards over the years, including Platinum, Double Gold, and Gold medals. Additionally, we’ve received consecutive five-star ratings in the esteemed Platter’s Wine Guide, a testament to our place among South Africa’s finest wine producers.
